A mid-May training in Uganda focused on safety and security, especially in regards to digital concerns. Participants say the one-day training was educational, interactive and important, and they hope to see more like it in the future.

More than 50 journalists met in Guayaquil and Quito in early May for workshops focused on how to safely report on organized crime. Since three Ecuadorean journalists were murdered while covering drug trafficking in April, the nation’s media community has been looking for solutions and ways to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Journalists and editors attending WAN-IFRA’s Second annual Women in News Southeast Asia Summit issued a set of recommendations for the media industry to help improve gender balance and safety for women in the industry. Recommendations focused on two overarching themes: concrete steps to increase women’s leadership and voices in the news, and safety and protection for women journalists.
